Biodiversity research expeditions at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex
Operation Wallacea has run biodiversity research expeditions worldwide (www.opwall.com), giving students from around the world the opportunity to gain valuable experience and get their hands dirty with real biodiversity research.
From dense jungle and European grasslands to coral reefs and Mediterranean seagrass meadows, their network of more than 200 academics assist in developing and leading cutting edge research projects that help to inform local conservation management strategies.
Since 2021 they have been working with the Knepp Estate to develop student training courses in the wide arrays of skills needed to develop a career in UK wildlife conservation or climate change and quantifying carbon and biodiversity credits to provide the funding to plug the funding gap at the start of rewilding schemes.
This training course is based in a field camp as you would experience on expedition and is designed to provide participants some of the practical field experience in wildlife survey techniques, analysis of data and how to write up scientific reports, that you would have experienced on a overseas Opwall expedition. In addition it gives exposure to professional scientists, field biologists, film makers etc that have made careers in wildlife conservation or climate change, so you can see the career opportunities available.
For more information you can sign up to join one of their seminars Registration (gotowebinar.com)
If you'd like to sign up visit: Operation Wallacea | Conservation Research Expeditions (opwall.com)

Ongoing Work Experience
Work experience is an invaluable opportunity which not only could lead to a full time job within your chosen career path, but you'll learn transferable skills, day to day etiquette of the working world and just being in a working environment.
Work experience is also valuable content for a UCAS application. It'll help you check out career areas and show evidence of useful skills for coping with university study and life.
Top tips for finding work experience
- Get online. Search local authority websites, local businesses and LinkedIn
- Ask parents or friends for useful contacts and opportunities
- For speculative enquiries to employers, write to them and send a brief CV and covering letter stating clearly when you're available and what you are looking for i.e. work experience, volunteering, shadowing etc. This can be done online or even by visiting the organisation itself and talking to the manager.
- And remember if you don't ask, you don't get!
