  • Richly deserved success for GCSE students

    Published 12/08/21

Headteacher Mr Gray is pleased to announce an outstanding set of GCSE results for The Piggott School again this year. Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard and this year’s results are testament to that.

91% of pupils passed English Language and 91% passed mathematics GCSE at Level 4 or above. Our combined best English and mathematics Level 4+ pass rate was 87%.

Our five or more Level 4+ including best English and mathematics is 86%.

Exceptional results were achieved across a range of subjects with GCSE Level 4+ pass rates of 100% in nine subjects: Art and Design, Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, Computer Science, Further maths, Photography, Physics and Statistics.

All our other subjects achieved outstanding pass rates including History (97%), Spanish (96%), French (95%), German (90%), Media Studies (89%), Geography (89%), Drama (89%), English Literature (88%), Sports Studies (88%), Business Studies (87%), RE (87%), Music (86%), Design Technology (85%), Combined Science (84%) and Food Technology (76%). We also had a 97% Level 2 pass rate for Performing Arts – Dance.

“The vast majority of our students will be returning to study in our sixth form in September, together with a significant number of external candidates. The Piggott School Sixth Form is a centre of excellence for Academic, Applied General and Technical learning.”

  • Students praised for dedication

    Published 12/08/21

Headteacher Mr Gray is pleased to announce another outstanding set of A Level and Level 3 Vocational results for The Piggott School in each of our Academic, Applied General and Technical courses. Staff and students have all worked exceptionally hard and this is reflected in the grades awarded.

A level results at The Piggott School continue to show year on year improvement from an already very high baseline. Our A level pass rate was 99.5% with 43.7% of grades at A* & A. 68.5% of our results were graded at A*-B, and over 90% graded A*-C. The average point score per A level entry was 41 points using the QCA system.

Our Vocational Level 3 pass rate for Applied General qualifications was 96%, with Distinction Star to Merit being 94%. For Technical subject entry, every student excelled in the course with all grades at Distinction or Distinction Star level.

This once again shows our outstanding Sixth Form as a centre of excellence for Academic, Applied General and Technical learning.

School Captain Harry Daisley felt a mixture of two emotions when he received an A* in A-Level Biology, Chemistry and History. “The first being relief and the second being disbelief. The finished product has been so validating because we’ve had a unique experience during the pandemic and this has shown that I have been able rise to a challenge like this and it is testament to the teachers also. I am planning to study Medicine at the University of Leeds and hopefully become a doctor.”

School captain Chloe Eames received A* for Business and Physical Education, together with an A in Biology and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Chloe was completely relieved when she opened her results this morning. “It’s just a massive relief when you get that email saying your place is confirmed at university.” Chloe will be studying Sport and Exercise Science at Exeter University and hopes to become a physiotherapist.

Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics student Matthew Sullivan will be going on to study Physics at Oxford University having received A* across the board. He doesn’t know what to expect from university but he’s hoping for a lot of fun and a lot of physics!

Mr Gray wishes all Piggott students the very best for their future and thanks all the teaching and support staff for their continued dedication and professionalism.

  • Cool kids working in IT

    Published 30/06/21

Year 7 students took part in a special virtual event run by CISCO called CISCO Kids in IT which aimed to show students how fun and exciting the technology industry can be. The event was designed to expose them to other job functions within the industry like HR, Marketing and Sales, showing the that they do not need to be part of the ‘geeky’ stereotype to work in IT. In addition, the team at CISCO showed them what key skills are needed for working in business;  encouraged them to work in teams and gave them a chance to get up and present back to the rest of the group and the experts over at CISCO via a live feed.

  • Piggott Sports Days

School Sports Day, typically the day that the whole school comes together to compete for house victory, is one of the most exciting and memorable days on the school calendar. Whatever your ability, there is a role to play for every student on Sports Day.

With the recent announcement from No.10 that school sports days can go ahead within bubbles, we have planned (subject to weather) sports days on the following days. Unfortunately we cannot welcome spectators to the event but be sure to ask your children how they got on!

Year 7 students on Wednesday 30th June

Year 8 students on Tuesday 13th July

Year 9 students on Friday 2nd July

  • Make your voice heard

    Published 15/06/21

For students and their families living in Charvil, you have the chance to influence what your neighbourhood will look like in the future by completing the Neighbourhood Plan Survey here https://neighbourhoodplan.charvil.com

    CHARVIL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN IS:

    • About covering important issues such as green spaces, leisure, traffic, transport, schoolssocial and economic needs and priorities, as well as any local housing needs

    • Your chance to influence what your neighbourhood will look like in the future: it will be much more effective than any late-stage objections to developments on a case-by-case basis

    • A document (it has legal weight!), covering 2026-2036, that Wokingham Borough Council must take into consideration when planning future development for the village

    • Currently in production by Charvil Parish Council and local volunteers, led by a steering group

    • Guided by the response of local residents to a community survey, which is then the subject of a local referendum before being adopted

    • To establish the vision and policies needed for shaping any future development of Charvil, while balancing the needs of the local community, the wider neighbourhood and surrounding areas

  • Learning to Lead

    Published 12/05/21

Each year, our Year 9 students have the opportunity to apply to become a leader and role model in the subject they have a passion for.  In normal circumstances, our leaders would deliver a series of sessions for primary school students. Due to current circumstances, we wanted to ensure our Year 9 students had the opportunity to take part in this rewarding programme, so our leaders delivered a number of exciting and engaging activities for their peers in Year 9 instead of primary age children.

Our Leadership Programme is designed to give students a unique learning experience, which will give them the skills and confidence to lead and manage in a variety of different situations. Focusing on confidence and self-esteem, the programme promotes maturity, commitment and team work. It will enable students to experience what it is like to stand up and take the lead.

There is no doubt that students learn by teaching and our Leadership Programmes will support your child's knowledge and enthusiasm for their favourite subject. In a results driven environment, it can be all too easy to forget the importance of social skills and people skills.

The personal journey that our students take throughout the programme stands them in good stead for their future careers and life itself. If successful, our leadership graduates will be able to use their workbooks and certificates to support entry into further education or employment.

As students begin Year 9, they will have the opportunity to apply to become an IT leader, a Sports leader, an ArtsMix leader, a Language leader, Design leader, Geography leader or a Music leader. We are unable to offer a leadership place to every student in Year 9 and therefore places will be awarded based on a formal application process.  Students that do not become leaders will take part in a student enrichment programme. Take a look at some photos of our leaders in action.

  • Twin success in computing challenge

    Published 17/03/21

Over 480 Piggott students from Years 7 - 13 took part in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge last November for a chance to make it through to the Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC), a prestigious event in computational thinking.

Of that number, 50 Piggott students scored in the top 10% nationally, automatically giving them a place in Oxford University’s ‘invitation-only’ event.

The first round of the annual OUCC challenge is held online in schools, and supervised by teachers with participants' solutions auto-marked by the OUCC system.

Following this, the top 20 students in each age group are usually invited to Oxford University to compete in the final, but for obvious reasons, the final will be held remotely in 2021.

This year, Piggott twins Finlay and Oliver remarkably achieved a top 20 place after competing against 3,875 students nationwide in the Year 8 & 9 OUCC category.

This is a remarkable achievement, “We are all super excited and so proud of Oliver and Finlay”, says Patranjali Bhattacharya, the Head of Computer Science at The Piggott School.

“As a department we work hard to organise a great number of activities and competitions every year to inspire our students. This competition started in November and wrapped up over lockdown, which made things more challenging to organise and I thank Miss Leonard for all her hard work with this. When we make break-throughs like this, it is very inspiring to us and our students. It keeps us even more motivated to carry on!”

This is the Piggott’s second year competing in the OUCC and last year, finalist Matthew Sullivan won the chance to spend the day at Oxford University to participate in the finals and attend seminars.

The OUCC is an invitation event which aims to encourage students to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems.

We wish Finlay and Oliver all the best in the upcoming final tomorrow, Thursday 18th March. Follow The Piggott School on Twitter @PiggottCESchool to find out how the twins get on.
