We teach daily phonics sessions to all pupils in EYFS and Key Stage 1 following the scheme ‘Rocket Phonics’. This is a progressive scheme of work that provides exposure to the phonemes, graphemes and vocabulary needed in order to develop fluency in the children’s reading and confidence in writing. 

The scheme includes six units per year to map out the sequence of learning and ensure that phonics is progressive whilst providing opportunities for retrieval and consolidation. Each lesson provides the children with opportunities to explore new phonemes and graphemes at word, sentence and text level. This means that we can introduce and discuss new vocabulary with the children developing curiosity within language. 

The children will learn two letter sounds per week with a dedicated lesson to developing recognition and blending in reading moving onto the application and segmenting in spelling and writing. One session per week will be focused upon reading and writing common exception words which follows some phonetic patterns.

We have also incorporated Rocket Phonics Target Practise reading books within our weekly guided reading lessons to provide further exposure to the letter sounds the children have been taught in complete texts.  

In Key Stage 2 the children will continue to use the terminology and strategies taught within KS1 to support with reading and writing. Children who need additional support in these areas will receive further intervention through the use of resources from the Rocket Phonics scheme.
